Heartbreakingly we have to find a forever home for our beautiful, sweet, funny 7mos old (born 2/11/16) Rose Breasted Cockatoo named Dash. My husband just received a huge opportunity within his company overseas and we can't take Dash with us :(
After extensive research, we picked a breeder and got 1st choice out of the babies she had... She kept us updated weekly and when he was on 2 hand-feeding he came home!!... (read more) We took him to the Avian vet with 72 hrs of bringing him home and he's in perfect health!
He did have his wings clipped*** at the breeder so she could get him used to handling, etc. She had him giving kisses and when she said "lets go" he would come running behind her.
***We chose not to clip wings because we feel strongly that birds NEED to fly, it their nature. He still hasn't grown back his flight wings but he LOVES to flap his wings and is def building the muscles. I feel strongly that he goes w/ someone that will honor this and NOT clip his wings.
Dash eats 70% pellets of Roudybush or Zupreem (we got samples at the vet during his transition from hand feeding so we kept him on both brands)
20% of fresh veggies and fresh fruits and people food. He LOVES scrambled eggs (without the milk) meats and pretty much anything salty but we try to keep it simple because we want to keep him on a healthy diet.
Our avian vet strongly recommended this and we also confirmed while researching that RB Cockatoo can become obese which causes lots of medical problems and to keep seeds and any high-fat food to minimum.
We also keep special Trader-Joe nuts that he ONLY gets when we "trick-train" him. We learned a lot about positive training from Good Bird Inc, Barbara Heidenreich.
Dash is very loving and loves to be out of his cage at least an 1 1/2hr a day but is ALWAYS out more than that.
He loves to learn tricks and we do it with positive reinforcement. He can wave, turn-around, gives kisses, steps-up and steps-down, down pat. We are still working with much success to dance, spread his wings and go back in to cage. He thrives on training and interaction. He can be very loud like any other cockatoo but is quieter than other cockatoo species. He's the loudest when he wants attention ***WE DO NOT REACT TO HIS SCREECHING AND WAIT UNTIL HE STOPS B4 COMING TO GET HIM*** otherwise he thinks his yelling will get attention. He also is very loud when he's interacting/ playing with certain toys in his cage. He's starting to mimic other sounds and I truly believe he will be able to be taught to speak but I'm not positive since he hasn't yet (he's still very young)
Dash lives with two small dogs. He is familiar with their barking, etc. We also have 6 yr old twins that he lets pet but my husband and I haven't let hold just yet because the twins can be loud and unpredictable which we know isn't a good recipe for birds!
Dash resides in a Prevue Deluxe Parrot Bird Cage w/ Playtop Bird Cage, Model 3159. Unfortunately the cage is NOT included as we are giving it to our friend who needs it.
We are asking $1000 for Dash but will consider reasonable offers. I would much rather not ship Dash but I will consider it if we find the right forever home for him. If we do ship, you will have to cover the cost and I will of course arrange all the details as well as let you know cost.
Please email me/ text/ call if you're interested. Please know that I will make sure I find the right home for him and will want to speak to you and find out if it will be the right fit. Also know that as sweet and lovable as he is, it's going to take time for him to get settled in his new environment and learn to trust you.
Here are two links to some videos of Dash and his tricks he has learned...
